Saints Cosmas
and Damian
|
The brothers Cosmas and Damian were doctors. They
endured martyrdom in the city of Cyrus, in southern Syria.
The Emperor Justinian established a sanctuary in their
honour in Cyrus as a sign of gratitude for a cure ascribed to their intercession.
Already venerated in Argeles, their favour increased, in
1652, when they stopped the epidemic of plague, exactly on their feast day on September the 27th. They became the new patron saints of the parish.
In 1.700, a little share of their relics, was obtained from
Rome, and an altarpiece was built in their honour.
The altarpiece with altar, steps, and statues
(polychromatic wood sculpted and gilt around 1.700) is
registered as an historic monument. |
