Altarpiece of Saint James
Saint James was born in Bethsaida, in Judea. Son of
Zebedee, both, with his brother Saint John the Apostle,
were called together by Jesus, to belong to the Twelve
Apostles.

Jesus called James and John "the sons of the thunder"
because of their impetuous character.

James is the first apostle to suffer martyrdom,
beheaded in Jerusalem about 42.
He is the patron saint of the pilgrims, because of
pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostela. The badge
of the pilgrims were the Scallop and the Staff
(long pilgrim's stick).

This altarpiece is from the XVIIIth century.

The altarpiece with altar, steps, painted panels and
statues of Saint James (sculpted and gilt wood being
transformed during the XIXth century), is registered as
an historic monument.
