Altarpiece of
Saint Michael
|
Saint Michael is the patron saint of the parachutists.
His name means: «Who is like God? » . Glorious
opponent of Satan, he is also represented as someone who weighs the merits of everybody at
the entrance of the heaven.
In the book of Daniel, he is represented as the
protector of Israel, and in the book of the Apocalypse, as the chief of the celestial armies that fight the Dragon.
But art and popular traditions take the character and
gave him the aspect and the paper of a knight.
Saint Michael, who appeared to Joan of Arc to
reaffirm her in her mission, have been proclaimed protector of France.
The altarpiece, from the end of the 15th century,
has been restored in1989.
